Who Can be a Codependent?
Many people falsely believe that codependency only happens to those who are in relationships with addicts or alcoholics. The truth is that many people develop codependent behaviors. Often they stem from a variety of relationships including your parent/child, romantic, professional, and social relationships. Codependency is a learned behavior and behaviors can be changed and improved with skillful counseling. At Melissa Hunter Therapy, I specialize in helping you find healthy ways to ask for what you need, talk about your feelings, feel more connected and intimate in your relationships, and develop and build your self-confidence and self-esteem.
The first step in changing unhealthy behaviors and patterns of relating is to understand them. Many times, clients ask me if they will become cold and unfeeling towards their loved ones if they do codependency work and the answer is “No!” By working through codependent behaviors, most people begin to feel happier, less anxious, and more fulfilled in their relationship. Hope lies in learning more. The more you understand codependency and how it affects your life the better you can cope. Reaching out for help and support can help you live a healthier, more fulfilling life.
